NASA's Final Shuttle Mission?

i read that NASA's final shuttle mission, Atlantis, will be coming up in a few days. Then they will be closing down the shuttle program. can anyone explain what is going on and why they're shutting it down? every article i've read is very vague on the reason behind it. thanks
