Why is no-one ever a peasant in their past lives?

I was watching this programme and everyone was saying 'I was a queen', 'I was a duke', 'I was a stable girl who had an affair with a Lord and became a lady'. The best was 'I was the King of Atlantis'. Where are all the down-trodden paupers?!
